The fourth season of Yellowstone is expected to premiere later this summer. As tensions build between the Duttons and their reluctant ally, Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham), some insight from the show’s cast suggest their shaky allegiance could come crashing down when the Paramount Western continues.
Ranch owner John Dutton (Kevin Costner) could turn on Thomas Rainwater once again during the fourth season of Yellowstone.
The two rivals have been at odds with each other from the start, as Broken Rock Chief Rainwater is desperate to take back the land he claims was stolen from his ancestors.
However, season three saw the powerful men put their considerable differences aside to focus on a common enemy; Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway) and Market Equities.
Their efforts were sadly in vain, as the season concluded with a blistering attack on John and his two children, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth (Kelly Reilly).

Although the culprit is currently unknown, all signs seem to be pointing to Roarke having something to do with the attempt on John’s life.
Once the Duttons’ new foe has been dealt with, however, the ruthless landowner may have to shift his attention back to Rainwater’s plight to reclaim the Yellowstone ranch.
Comments from cast members Ian Bohen and Denim Richards seemed to confirm as much in a video series dissecting the events of the series so far.
Colby star Denim Richards maintained the temporary truce between the Duttons and Rainwater would last only as long as there wasn’t another threat standing in their way.
The star continued: “And so, when you have these corporations who want to come in to build this and build that, it’s just ‘no, no, no, you have no emotional ties to the land’.”
Teasing a potential outcome in season four, Richards added: “So let’s take care of them, and then we’ll take care of each other.”
Moreover, if Roarke was behind the attacks on the Duttons at the end of season three, John may need further help from Rainwater to take him down.
Once his shady business deals are no longer a threat, the Duttons and Broken Rock are finally free to play out the rest of their land war.
Co-star Ian Bohen also chimed in: “For the time being, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
“And I’ll use that as long as I can and everybody’s gonna take advantage of that until the most imminent threat disappears. And then we’re gonna return to business as usual.”
Whether the two warring factions return to business next season or further down the line is still to be decided.
As Yellowstone has already started developing a new spin-off, Y:1883, the series may save John Dutton and Thomas Rainwater’s climactic final face-off for a potential fifth season.
Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in June 2021 on Paramount.
