The popular USA Network crime drama dropped a massive game-changer at the end of its fourth season last year with the surprise return of a familiar face. Queen of the South fans have been patiently waiting for new episodes, also expected to drop on Netflix, ever since. Principal cast member Molly Burnett took to her Instagram profile to share an update on filming.
The latest instalment of Teresa Mendoza’s (played by Alice Braga) rise to power shook things up by spreading the Queen of the South’s drug empire into New Orleans.
During season four, Teresa struck new deals but failed to protect her godson Tony Parra (Julian Silva) from her conniving new foe, Judge Cecil Lafayette (David Andrews).
Now harboring a thirst for revenge, the drug mogul is preparing to go to war in the streets of the Big Easy and take full control over the Judge’s territory.
However, her plans were suddenly derailed in the season finale after the shocking reappearance of James Valdez (Peter Gadiot), warning of an approaching new threat.

Following considerable delays after the outbreak of coronavirus, fans have now been waiting for over a year to find out what’s in store in season five.
Whether Teresa will face off against a new rival or see the return of some old enemies is still being kept under wraps by new showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez.
Thankfully, viewers now know the premiere of Queen of the South’s new instalment isn’t too far away as the cast and crew have confirmed filming for season five is underway.
While neither the USA Network or Netflix have confirmed when new episodes can be expected to hit screens, the exciting news means new episodes should start to air in the first half of 2021.
On the as yet unknown filming schedule, Burnett said: “I’ll keep you guys updated. Sooner than later. We have all the scripts, and holy s**t! You guys are in for an insane season five, so get ready.”
Burnett’s Kelly Anne van Awken was introduced in season three and conspired with Teresa against Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón) before being discovered as a mole and faking her death to escape.
She then returned in season four as a love interest for Pote (Hemky Madera), much to Teresa’s disapproval.
Kelly Anne is expected to play a major role as season five unfolds, and fans are eager to see her unexpected bonds with James and Pote develop, as well as earning back Teresa’s trust.
The actress later returned to Instagram after opening her story up to fan questions.
