Martin Lewis shares update on free £5,000 vouchers to update your home – warning

Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert, regularly shares his money saving tips online and on TV. Tonight on ITV’s The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, he shared a warning for Britons hoping to use the Green Homes Grant.

The discount aims to cover at least two thirds of the cost of improvements.

This can be up to £5,000, or £10,000 for those in low income households.

Martin explained: “It is where you can get up to £5,000 free, it pays two thirds of the cost of green improvements to your home.

“Or, £10,000 for some on lower incomes and that pays the whole cost.

“To get it, you need to first fit a primary measure which could be new insulation or carbon heating.

“Then you can get the same amount you got on the primary measure on a secondary measure.

“To find out what you’re eligible for, go to Gov.uk and use it’s Green Homes Eligibility Checker.

“Then you’ll need to get quotes from registered trades people.”

While this would be a welcome financial boost for many, it may not be around for long.

“Now I’ve said before this scheme is badly designed and over complex, but I would still investigate it,” Martin continued.

“Most of the two billion they put in hasn’t been used and it won’t roll over to the next tax year, there will be far less then so you should probably go quickly.

“Now there are newspaper rumours – I do not know if they are true – that the Government could soon impose a deadline and in effect, pull the whole thing.

“I don’t know if that means, if they do it within the next week or so, there will still be time to actually get one of these grants.

“But my big advice is if you think this might be for you, start checking it out now.

“It’s a job for you to do now, not next week, not in two weeks – now.”

The expert explained the scheme could be set to change so those hoping to benefit should try and act fast.
