Man Utd player ratings vs Crystal Palace: Six get 4s or less as Red Devils suffer 3-1 loss

Manchester United fell to defeat against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday evening – although debutant Donny van de Beek was on hand to score his first goal for the Red Devils late on. The Dutchman’s effort reduced the deficit with 10 minutes to go but ex-United winger Wilfried Zaha put the game beyond United late on.

Visitors Palace led inside seven minutes when Andros Townsend got the better of David de Gea, picked over Dean Henderson in goal.

And the Eagles were the better team for the rest of the first half and also early into the second period.

Palace were handed a golden chance to make it 2-0 when they were awarded a contentious penalty for an apparent handball on Victor Lindelof.

Andre Ayew’s spot-kick was saved but De Gea was adjuged to have stepped over his line before the 12-yard effort was taken and Zaha stepped up for the retake.

He squeezed his penalty beyond Spain shot-stopper De Gea although Van de Beek, off the bench, offered hope of a comeback when he halved the deficit with 10 minutes left.

But Zaha put the game beyond the hosts with five minutes remaining, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner for his second goal of the game.

Express Sport rates and slates United’s performance after a disappointing start to the new Premier League season.

Manchester United player ratings vs Crystal Palace – Premier League

David de Gea – 5

Great reactions to deny Ayew on stroke of half time, but poor distribution and came off his line for penalty ‘save’.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 3

Gerrible time of it in first half, frequently gifting possession to Palace. Crossed for Greenwood’s chance. Subbed.

Victor Lindelof – 4

Struggled to get up to speed, gave away penalty (although it was harsh) and easily outmuscled by Zaha for third.

Harry Maguire – 7

Frustrating afternoon. Booked for foul on Zaha and pulled out of position on occasions but one of United’s better players.

Luke Shaw – 6

Struggled a little against Townsend early, but good pace and some good blocks.

Paul Pogba – 4

Couple of decent shots saved but frequently gave ball away, no surprise he was subbed.

Scott McTominay – 7

Some good defensive work, covering tackle to pick Zaha’s pocket.

Daniel James – 4

Largely anonymous first half and totally anonymous second after and hooked at the break.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Busy throughout and did his best to link play but became frustrated and not at his best.

Marcus Rashford – 4

Another who was poor, pace accuracy with his final shot well off throughout, two shots wide.

Anthony Martial – 4

Hard to remember him affecting the game at all, walked through the second half, poor display.

Mason Greenwood (on for James, min 45) – 5

Put a golden chance tamely wide with header and struggled to get involved.

Donny van de Beek (on for Pogba, min 67) – 6

Buzzing presence after coming on after the hour and took his goal well with neat sidefoot finish.

Odion Ighalo (on for Fosu-Mensah, min 81) – 5

Not on long enough to affect the game.
