Liverpool suffer significant title blow as Virgil van Dijk set to undergo surgery on ACL

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is set to undergo surgery on a damaged anterior cruciate ligament after Jordan Pickford’s horror tackle in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Everton goalkeeper Pickford trapped Van Dijk’s right knee in a scissor tackle but was not sent off despite the Video Assistant Referee reportedly reviewing the incident.

The Netherlands captain was forced to hobble off but despite walking off the pitch unaided, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

It is not yet clear how long the 29-year-old will be unavailable for although the Reds are likely to be without their influential centre-half for almost all of the current Premier League campaign.

The news, which comes after Van Dijk went for scans at hospital on Saturday and then had a specialist consultation on Sunday, is a significant blow to Liverpool’s hopes of retaining their title.

The Dutchman has been a major part of their Champions League and Premier League success in the past two seasons.

Before going off in the first 10 minutes at Goodison Park, Van Dijk had not missed a minute of action in England’s top flight since January 2018.

Signed for £75million from Southampton two years ago, Van Dijk was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018-19 season and has been in the Premier League Team of the Year in both of the last two seasons.

Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are expected to be Liverpool’s first-choice pairing at centre-back from now on.

They are Liverpool’s only natural senior centre-halves but Fabinho can be deployed at the heart of the back-line while Nat Phillips and Billy Koumetio could also get minutes this term.
