According to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service a “large quantity” of waste is now ablaze at the facility.
Eight fire engines are battling the fire which enveloped the Gaskells waste site.
Authorities are advising local residents to keep their windows and doors closed our of fear of toxic fumes.
The Liverpool Echo reports the blaze was first reported at 5.21am this morning.
Rescue workers have described the fire as “significant” and are using water from a nearby canal to fight it.
People are being urged to avoid the area whilst the operation continues.
Firefighters expect this to continue for some time due to the size of the blaze.
