Liverpool may have Virgil van Dijk fit for next season but the club are already looking for the next big thing to bolster their defence.
Liverpool are already scouting who can replace Virgil van Dijk ahead of next season.
The Dutchman has missed most of the campaign this year through a serious knee injury suffered in October.
But there are worries that the £75m man might not be the player he once was when he returns to fitness.
It has led the Reds to open up a search party for the ‘next Van Dijk’ – and they have their sights set on one already.
RB Leipzig star Ibrahima Konate has attracted the attention of Liverpool, as well as Manchester United and Chelsea.
But one of Jurgen Klopp’s former team-mates at Mainz has revealed the Frenchman would sign for the Reds in a heartbeat.
Guido Schafer compared Konate to Van Dijk after opening up over the Leipzig star’s best attributes.
“He’s as good as Dayot Upamecano when he is fit, but Ibrahima has one problem and this is the problem with injuries,” he told the Blood Red podcast.
“He’s a very, very tough player. Tall, also fast, good technique, a good view of the match, and I think a little bit Virgil van Dijk, a little bit.”
There was a huge transfer chase on earlier in the year for Dayton Upamecano at RB Leipzig, with the Premier League big boys interested.
But the Frenchman has agreed a deal with Bayern Munich, though his defensive partner would sign for Liverpool straight away, Schafer insisted.
“If Jurgen Klopp will call him and say ‘Ibrahima, come to the Anfield Road,’ I think he would say yes,” he added. “It’s one of the most famous clubs in the world.”
