Gordon Ramsay swiped by Gino D'Acampo over chef talent: 'His head is exploding!'

Gino D’Acampo says Gordon Ramsay’s head is ‘already exploding’

Ramsay is considered among Britain’s finest chefs. After being trained by culinary guru Marco Pierre White, he forged a fruitful career on TV. The 54-year-old is known for his foul-mouthed rants aimed at both amateur restaurateurs and even his fellow chefs. On a number of occasions, he has clashed with D’Acampo since they started on the small screen.

The chefs return to ITV tonight on the show Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip – alongside First Dates star Fred Sirieix.

During the programme, the trio visited European countries to explore different nations’ cuisine and culture.

Ramsay and D’Acampo have often locked horns during the trips as they battle it out to prove who is the supreme chef.

Ahead of one of the shows last year, the Hell’s Kitchen star took aim at his rival on Frank Warren’s Heavyweight Podcast.

He described D’Acampo as “overrated” and admitted he isn’t fond of chefs who take “s***ty shortcuts to get the job done quicker”.

Ramsay argued that most TV chefs “wouldn’t last an hour in a professional kitchen”.

He branded himself “a real chef, not a TV chef” because he received his “first Michelin star at 33 [years old]”.

But Ramsay’s confidence likely took a hit after some cutting words from his ITV rival D’Acampo on Family Fortunes last year.

During the quiz show, D’Acampo was astonished that the contestants were struggling to name six famous TV chefs.

Multiple times in the round, he yelled: “Wow, I thought this was an easy round!

“There are millions of cookery shows on television.”

The chef seemed nervous after the first contestant’s answer was “Gino”.

He said: “Oh please, let it be!”

D’Acampo breathed a sigh of relief and added “not bad, not bad” when he was revealed to be third, from a survey of 100 people.

The TV star pulled a funny face after the next contestant said: “Gordon Ramsay.”

D’Acampo responded: “If Gordon is number one that’s it, his… his head is already exploding!”

Ramsay flashed at the top of the list and had been named by 51 people compared to seven for D’Acampo.

The TV star told the audience: “No, no, no, no! There’s no need for applause, ok!”

As the round progressed, the contestants found it difficult to name another correct answer – all four chefs they offered were not on the list.

During that time, D’Acampo made several digs at Ramsay’s expense including regularly pretending not to know who he was.

In one, he said: “So far, we’ve got me and the other, the Scottish… Gordon, Gordon Ramsay.”

In a second he referred to him as “the Scottish chef” again.

After other incorrect answers including Rick Stein, Gary Rhodes and Mary Berry, D’Acampo protested: “This is unbelievable.”

At the end of the round, after neither team was able to name any more correct chefs, the TV host took to the stage.

D’Acampo, who began listing names, said: “I don’t know the answers but I’m guessing Jamie Oliver!”

The Channel 4 chef was the second-most popular with 19 votes, James Martin in fifth with four votes and Ainsley Harriott in fourth with six votes.

For the final answer, D’Acampo seemed a little less certain and told the audience: “Last one! Come on, tell me the last one.”

Names including Nigella Lawson and Delia Smith were yelled but to their surprise, Fanny Craddock was named as the last chef with two votes.

D’Acampo gave another insight into his relationship with Ramsay in a 2018 episode of This Morning.

They shared caravan beds while filming abroad together and D’Acampo claimed his rival was “a big boy in every way”.

He continued: “In the morning to wake me up… seriously he actually admitted… he used to bash his willy on my foot.

“Every morning it was like, ‘Wakey wakey!’, I was like, ‘Are you for real?’”

Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip airs at 9pm tonight on ITV.
