EU blasted over China deal by own MEPs and experts – ‘They got used’

Speaking to the Telegraph, Mr Lohman continued to say the CAI was “strategic versus the US”, and warned it puts up barriers with Washington and Brussels.

He said: “Beijing succeeded with Brussels, and will succeed with Washington, if we allow the CAI to block future cooperation between us.”

Reinhard Butikofer, German MEP and chair of the European Parliament’s delegation on China, bluntly accused the EU of “helping Xi Jinping to show Joe Biden the middle finger” on Twitter in December.

He added at the time: “The whole idea that EU must hurry to strike a China deal to impress the US is misguided.

“It helps EU sovereignty more, if we demonstrate that we know when to stand tall to China. And to align with partners.”
