Cressida Bonas didn't 'love circus' that came with Prince Harry

Royal wedding: Cressida Bonas arrives at St George’s Chapel

Nearly a month after their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle and Harry remain well under the spotlight. While the Royal Family continue to restore their image, the couple appear to have moved on. Harry has since announced a string of new job roles in the US’ Silicon Valley.

He and Meghan moved to the country last year in order to pursue private lives, a sticking point in his past relationships.

For two years between 2012 and 2014, Harry dated actress Cressida Bonas.

Many royal commentators believed the pair would go on to marry.

It was a failed romance, however, with Cressida ending the relationship after being “spooked” watching Prince William and Kate Middleton’s overseas tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Speaking to Channel 5’s 2018 documentary, ‘Meghan & Harry: In Their Own Words’, royal reporter Camilla Tominey said the actress was not prepared to take on the “circus” of royalty.

Talking about Harry’s relationships before Meghan, she said: “He’s always had a string of pretty serious relationships with pretty serious women.

“For the longest period he chose Chelsy Davy, a very bright girl from Zimbabwe.

“I don’t think that worked simply because although she loved him, she didn’t love the status of monarch and the baggage that he came with.

“And then Cressida Bonas, again a very bright spark, a lovely girl.

“She loved Harry and loved being with Harry, but not the circus that comes with him.”

Last year, Cressida spoke to Australia’s The Daily Telegraph and admitted that she once feared being branded an “it” girl for life after their split.

She said: “The fear of failing, the fear of rejection, the fear of not getting it right, the fear of not being perfect … I think that has limited me in certain situations in my life.”

The publication said it “hinted at what could have been” had she married into the Firm.

In Katie Nicholl’s 2017 biography, ‘Harry: Life, Loss and Love’, she revealed the extent to which Kate and William’s actions had dissuaded Cressida from continuing with Harry.

Ms Nicholl wrote: “Cressida had been ‘completely spooked’ while watching TV coverage of William, Kate and George touring New Zealand and Australia that spring.”

A friend told the author: “She (Cressida) was sitting at home watching Kate on the royal tour of Australia, and it was a wake-up call.

“There was no way she wanted that sort of attention and she told Harry so.”

The friend also revealed: “Harry didn’t want things to end.

“He was in love with her and he tried to convince her they could make it work, but Cressida’s mind was made up.

“Harry suffered a real blow when she said ‘I can’t do this.’

“I think she really broke his heart.”

Ms Nicholl added: “Twice [Harry] had been left heartbroken because the women he had fallen in love with didn’t want to share the life he had been born into.”

While the royals were largely unable to respond to the charges aimed at them by Meghan and Harry during the Oprah interview, William broke with protocol and made his feelings clear during a school visit in East London earlier this month.

When asked by a reporter if the royals were racist, he replied: “We’re very much not a racist family.”

He and their father, Prince Charles, are believed to have spoken to Harry since the interview.

Gayle King, an anchor for This Morning on CBS who attended Meghan’s lavish baby shower in New York, revealed the news this month, and said talks between Harry and the royals were “not productive”.
