Boris takes thinly-veiled jibe at Labour leader with post after Starmer turfed out of pub

The Prime Minister’s Instagram account shared a picture of Mr Johnson enjoying a pint in a pub garden. The Conservative leader visited The Mount Taven in Wolverhampton while campaigning ahead of the local elections in May.

The caption on the picture read: “Great to be back at the pub again, and to see so many reunited with friends and family.

“We’ve worked so hard to get to this point. Let’s keep going.

“Remember hands, face, space & fresh air.”

The image was posted on social media just hours after Sir Keir was forced to abandon a pub visit of his own while campaigning.

And some social media users were quick to point out the timing of the Prime Minister’s post.

One wrote: “The fact that this was posted after Keir Starmer was thrown out of one is hilarious.”

The Labour leader attempted to visit The Raven in Bath, but was kicked out by the landlord who accused Sir Keir of “failing” voters in Opposition.

Landlord Rod Humphris was held back by members of Sir Keir’s security team as he shouted “That man is not allowed in my pub” and “Get out of my pub” at the Labour leader.

The encounter was captured on camera by the media accompanying the Labour leader on his visit.

Sir Keir was left looking visibly shaken up by the confrontation.

Asked why he told Sir Keir to leave, Mr Humphris later said: “I had heard that the Labour Party were coming round and he turned up and I told him what I thought of him, basically.

“I think he has utterly failed us as the Leader of the Opposition.

“He has completely failed to ask the questions that needed asking, like, why did we throw away our previous pandemic preparedness?

“Why have we just accepted lockdown? Why have we just accepted the loss of all our freedoms?”

The 54-year-old, who said he does not agree with coronavirus lockdowns, said: “He walked into my pub without asking and I threw him out.

“Or at least, I did my best to throw him out – his security got in the way.”

The Labour Party press office said on Twitter that it would “not be amplifying” the footage of the Labour leader being confronted.

It said: “A clip circulating online shows Keir Starmer being confronted by someone spreading dangerous misinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic. We will not be amplifying it.

“Keir argued that our NHS staff have been working tirelessly to protect public health and that restrictions – while painful – have been absolutely necessary to save lives.”

Mr Johnson’s trip to The Mount Tavern was the first time he has visited a pub since the easing of lockdown rules last Monday.

He had originally planned to visit a pub last Monday but cancelled his trip as a mark of respect following the death of Prince Philip.
