BBC QT audience member blasts footballers taking the knee as ‘symbol rather than action’

Over the past few weeks, England fans have been booing when football players take a pre-match knee in the fight against racism. In Thursday night’s BBC Question Time programme, an audience member asked whether taking the knee is “habitual tokenism or a massive step towards tackling racism”. During the discussion another audience member shared his opinion on the topic and accused it of being a “symbol” rather than an “action”.

He said: “I just wanted to mention that I find it an issue that I’m quite conflicted about.

“I don’t watch football. The only time I’ve seen footballers take the knee is when it’s shown on the news.

“But I go to the theatre a lot and … it would become a little frustrating at the start of each show if all the actors had to come out and take the knee and it would soon become a bit of a pantomime.

“A symbol rather than action. I think it’s the right message but maybe the wrong forum.”

His comments come as a new YouGov poll revealed that football fans are split over whether taking the knee actually helps to tackle racism.

Only 37 percent of football fans in England thought the gesture was important in tackling racism.

Whereas 57 percent of fans in England did not think it was important in tackling racism.

The poll also spoke to a sample of almost 200 football fans from ethnically diverse backgrounds across Great Britain.

Of these people, 78 percent said they supported the gesture, 12 percent did not and 10 percent said they did not know.

England manager Gareth Southgate said his players are determined “more than ever” to take the knee during the upcoming Euro 2020 games.

He added: “Some people decide to boo – I think those people should put themselves in the shoes of those young players and how that must feel, and if that was their children, how would they feel about their kids being in that sort of situation.”
