Alisson opens up on how Liverpool will play without Virgil van Dijk as Fabinho claim made

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has opened up on Virgil van Dijk’s injury and offered the Dutch centre-back some advice as he prepares for a lengthy stretch on the sidelines. Van Dijk is set to undergo surgery on his knee after injuring his ACL, and Becker conceded he – and the rest of the team – will miss having him in the defence.

Van Dijk will likely miss the rest of the Premier League season after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton.

After being tackled by Jordan Pickford in the opening ten minutes of the Merseyside Derby, he was taken away for scans which showed the worst.

However, matters could be made worse for the domestic champions, with reports suggesting the problems in his knee might extend past the ACL.

Van Dijk has been ever-present for Liverpool since his 2018 move from Southampton, and has only missed three league games in the two-and-a-half years he’s been at Anfield.

“We cannot deny we will miss Virgil,” he said.

“[But] Fab is a great player. We don’t need to change the way we play but we will miss him, he’s one of the best in the world.”

Becker then went on to offer the 29-year-old some words of advice for dealing with long-term injuries, and declared he refuses to let the risk of injury change the way he plays.

The goalkeeper missed nine league games last year through injuries, and was unable to play in the UEFA Super Cup final as a result.

“I believe in my faith and working hard helps me to make a fast recovery.

“Every injury you have on a ligament still feels something weird, not pain but it’s just weird.

“It’s nothing that puts limits on my way to play.

“I feel comfortable with that.”
